Monday afternoon, I took part in a bait and switch scheme with Larry Bronkema. We targeted victims at Shadyside Lake. The bait: was that we lured them in with the false promise of a tasty meal. The switch was: when the bluegill bit down on the beemoth, they found a sharp hook instead. They were baited with promise of tasty meal, but instead they became the tasty meal.
Sometimes churches and evangelists are accused of executing the classic bait-and-switch, when they talk about only the advantages of Christianity, but never the cost.
In this passage Jesus talks less about the Privileges of abiding in the Vine, and more about the Persecution. He talks less about Friends and more about Enemies. Less about Love and more about Hate.
In fact, in 8 verses (v. 18-25) forms of the word “hate” occur 8x! Jesus does not hide the fact that if you follow Him, the world will hate you.
