One year I was reading through the Bible and, as I came into the life of David in the Old Testament historical books, a small detail I had paid little attention to before took on great significance. As I meditated on it, I began to try to make what I thought could be a life-changing application to my own life and found it incredibly motivating.
I began to look the passage up in the commentaries and was surprised that I couldn’t find where anyone else had made the kind of application that had so set my heart afire. At first I thought maybe I was reading something into it, but the more I studied it I became convinced my interpretation and application was accurate and I began to notice the principle in other passages including New Testament texts.
Since I had the opportunity to preach in various places, I began to share this secret of David’s success in a message from time to time and saw God greatly use it to stir revival and even bring people into His kingdom. God used it in a special way when I shared some of these principles in this church while I was still in evangelism in August 1983. The former pastor was thrilled with the moving of God that resulted. When I shared some of these truths at BJU, God spoke in a special way among the student body.
Best I can tell from my records, it’s been at least ten years, maybe a good bit longer, since I last shared some of these truths with our congregation though they still motivate me daily. For some time I’ve sensed the Lord’s leading to go back into first Samuel and the life of David and preach to this generation of our church family about where some of David’s power with God came from. When you take it seriously, God can use it to great advantage in your life, as He has mine!
