In recent years there's been a backlash against organized Christianity-in both secular and Christian circles. People say "If Jesus came to earth today, the last thing He would be, is a Christian." Or "The last place He would be found is in a church."
Now there may be some truth to that. Just because a place calls itself a "house of God" doesn't really mean God's presence and blessing are there. In fact, if Jesus came to some churches, he might bring a whip and clean it out like He did the Temple.
In fact, the saddest chapters in history are when evil atrocities were done in the name of Christ. Even to this day the Crusades and the Inquisition, the Salem Witch trials, the slavery and racism in Christian areas of our own country give Christianity a black eye.
So what is real Christianity? Many are today are unsure what it means to be a Christian. And many who think they're sure, are wrong.
Because Christianity is all about Jesus Christ. Christ is the heart of Christianity. Having a real, ongoing relationship with Jesus, having fellowship with Him, is more important than anything else in the Christian life. Because everything else will come out of that relationship. How can we bear much fruit? By abiding in the Vine.
It does no good to take a dead apple tree and a staple gun and staple Red Delicious apples to it. You can polish the apples. You can shine the apples. But what will happen, they'll die. If you want fruit you have to be connected to the Source of Life.
If you want to grow as a Christian, you have to have a vibrant relationship with Christ.
