This is one of the most beautiful short stories in all scripture and all literature.
This story resonates with so many because it deals with real people in real life. In just 85 verses we’re going to see issues like: unemployment, infertility, being a single parent, welfare, widowhood, the death of children, bitterness, romance and the birth of a grandchild.
The story begins with a real family who does what many families do—they backslide, they fall away from God. They leave the house of God and go to a place of compromise. They are a Prodigal Family. And their story serves as a warning.
In 1986 two electrical engineers sat in a control room in northern Ukraine. They were performing what the Soviets later described as an unauthorized experiment on a nuclear reactor. In order to perform this test, to push the reactor to its limits, they had to manually override 6 separate computer-driven alarm systems.
One by one the computers would come up and say, 'Stop! Dangerous! Go no further!' And one by one, rather than shutting off the experiment, they shut off the alarms and kept going. You know the results: Chernobyl, a city of 55,000 had to be abandoned and nuclear fallout was recorded all around the world, from the largest industrial accident in history.
This evening, in these first five verses we’re going to see 3 sober warnings about backsliding. And the fallout that sin can have on your family and those around you
